Rick & Cindy Black Architects

The architects are the homeowners of this very compact house on a triangular half-lot in the North Loop neighborhood, the design of which was enabled by the Small Lot Amnesty rule in 2003. The mandate to build small gave them the chance to explore ideas about relative size and scale... creating a house that is at once cozy and grand. Two architects married and working together, this was their first project to design for themselves. The goals from the start were to integrate a rational structure, green building technology, low-budget finishes, and an awareness of the neighborhood context. The house received a 5 star rating from Austin Energy Green Building Program. Over time, the use of space has evolved in the house—they had a child, bought new furniture, experimented with color, learned to garden, hosted friends and family, said goodbye to a cat, and just generally became more like adults. Now, this ‘project’ feels like the one and only home they cannot imagine leaving.
